Info Marketing 101 – Know your Boundaries

In the information/training industry, there seem to be a lot of folks teaching the wrong things… Whether you’re successful in selling the information or not, it’s absolutely imperative that you do not sell information or attempt to “train” people on things that you have little or no experience in yourself.

It’s kinda obvious, I know… But more and more people are being misled by other people who teach things that they have not even done themselves… If you’re a victim of this, there’s nothing wrong with you… But now’s the time to get things straight and understand what you can & cannot teach, and I’m going to show you the solution to this once & for all…

Here’s the deal…

  1. If you have not done it yourself, & have not had lots of success doing it, you should not be teaching it at all… PERIOD!!
  2. If you have done it a little, and know how to do it from experience, but haven’t had too much success with it, you have the right to teach only the people who want the same level of success you’ve had with it.
  3. And if you have done it 1,000 times or more, and know it inside and out, and you have had TONS of success with it, by all means you are worthy of teaching it to just about anybody who wants to have the same success you’ve had in it.

Are you catching my drift here?

You have no business teaching something you don’t do yourself!

Don’t try to teach something that you have little or no experience in and have not had any success in… Newbies (I mean complete NEWBIES) claiming that they’re experts in some field that they have not done even once.

Like for example, I’ve seen a few people claim they can show me how to generate 15-20 leads a day for my business… But when I call them up & ask them how many leads they’re generating, they kinda stumble a little bit and can’t answer my question (in case you’re wondering, the typical answer is 0-1 lead per day lol).

Another guy says he can show me how to reach the top level of my network marketing business… I call him up & ask him how he’s doing in his business, and he says he’s been in it for 5 years and has only reached the third level of his company (just a few people in his organization)… What the heck does he know about reaching the top? NOTHING!!

I don’t expect you to know anything about what I’m talking about, because you might not be in the training industry or have an information business… But I just wanted to make this post for the folks who are…

You need to set your boundaries & fully understand what you can & cannot teach!

You can’t teach a self made multi-millionaire stock investor how to invest in the stock market, if your networth is just a couple million… You can not teach a multi-millionaire real estate expert real estate secrets, if you’ve only made a couple hundred thousand in real estate… Same goes for MLM… You can’t teach a multi-millionaire network marketer how to reach the top level of a company, if you’ve never made it to the top.

BUT!!!…

You can teach people what YOU KNOW, and what you’ve done!

If you’re worth a couple million in the stock market, you can teach a beginner or even an intermediate stock investor how to get their first couple million.

If you’ve made 6 figure income from real estate and continue to do so, you can teach beginners how to make their first 6 figures in real estate.

The same goes for EVERYTHING!! Just know your level, and know your boundaries, and make it very clear when you talk to your clients, or they will assume that you have done it already, yourself, and sooner or later you will lose their trust forever.

Remember, business is all about relationships… Don’t ever screw that up… Don’t ever lie, cheat, or say anything that will ruin your relationship with your clients… Tell them what they need to hear, not what they “want” to hear.

Now, that doesn’t mean that you cannot continue to help people in your industry/niche, by referring them to the right people and training program who can train your clients in the subject THEY know…

And it works out great for everyone!

  • Your clients get a trainer who actually knows their stuff!
  • The trainer gets a new client!
  • And you get paid for helping everyone! :)

That’s what it’s all about!

How to Position Yourself as a Leader in Your Industry Without Having Any Experience

I wanna leave you with a cool tip for how you can still position yourself as a leader in your industry (even if you don’t know anything about it), without misleading people and trying to teach something you don’t know.

It’s as simple as finding the real expert (try to find the best of the best), making a connection with them, and asking if you could refer clients to them. :)

If you put yourself in their shoes (or sandals – depending on where they are in the world), and someone comes up to you and asks you if they can send clients your way, what would you say?

I know I would say, “DEFINITELY! $end them right over!… Cha Ching!” :)

“But wait, there’s more!”

After the connection is made, ask them if you two can do a training together (via webinar, conference call, etc.) so that you can kinda interview them and have them teach your clients what they know… So by the end of the call, everyone feels so blessed to know you and so educated that they would like to learn more from them…

And you offer a special deal to your clients if they act within a certain time frame, and without you doing anything really, sales are made, and everyone’s happy. :)

Now, what if you recorded the interview, transcribed it & SOLD it as a special price to your clients? Or you could of course just give it away as a freebie… And that interview continued to bring in sale after sale, day & night, to your partner (the expert), and you get a piece of the action in the middle…

As long as the trainer really knows their stuff, why wouldn’t people sign up for their training? And how much love would your clients give you, when you have introduced them to the expert? They will LOVE YOU to death!!

That’s being a leader & a great friend! Giving people what they need to know, and not trying to pretend to be the one who “knows it all”… You’ll be helping your clients, helping your partner, and gaining respect from everyone!
